Review of Illustrated Short Fiction of William H. Coles: 2000-2016
Illustrated Short Fiction of William H. Coles: 2000-2016, contains 33 short stories, two graphic novels, and a novella, that are illustrated by Peter Healy and others. Many broad topics that range from love to racism, broken family issues to human trafficking, vengeance to cold-blooded murder, and other grander problems of society are addressed in this anthology.
The anthology opens with The Gift, which is also one of my favourite stories, and ends with only novella, Sister Carrie. The Gift is an inspiring story that describes the struggles of a mother having a disabled child, but also highlights the fact that it is too unjust to underestimate their rights as human beings. Speaking of the Dead shows that it is not easy to forget the pain someone has caused you in return of your trust. I like John’s attempt to create a good eulogy for his wife. His relationship with Henri, his stepdaughter’s roommate, was not explicitly mentioned. The Amish Girl was another good read that described the love of two culturally different yet similar people. The Necklace, set in Delhi, India, describes the need for trust and respect in a woman, despite love, as it is not the only priority for every woman. Not only is this, but mainly it is the story of two true lovers, who can’t decide to be bound in a relationship but, in the end, acknowledge the needs of marriage.
Coles has addressed the major common issues of every society, ensuring that no particular race is being scolded, as the plots are set in different regions and cities of Africa, Asia, and Europe. The characters are real descriptions of the author’s ability to develop unique characters with uncanny endings. His style in every story is smooth and flowing, and the details helped to imagine every scene as being with the characters. In every story, he has highlighted the uncommon stories of the common people, whom we pay no attention in our busy lives, but they do have needs and dreams like every one of us.
The thing that was not good in this book was the graphic novels, especially Reddog, which built quite different expressions in contrast with the story written in the book. Despite the fact that I like almost all the illustrations in the book Reddog was not a very commendable graphic novel. I was little confused due to the cut down of dialogues that spoiled my imagination of the story I had read before.
While reading the book, I did not notice any errors, assuming the book was well edited. Thus, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars . It is not good enough to deduct a star due to the graphic novel from such an informative anthology.
People who seek knowledge of different lifestyles and areas of society will find it an awesome match. This book might not be suitable for the young audience due to its content, but it might appeal to young adults who want to gather the different perspectives on life from the characters. The people who are fond of learning lessons from fiction rather than happy endings are perfect match for reading this novel.
