Review of Man Mission
Man mission by Eytan Uliel is a story that revolves around four longtime friends. A long time ago, these four friends decided to go on trips that tests their limits and challenge their spirit. Years later, they are all grown and struggling with their own lives. The main character of the story has a divorce while his other friends are also undergoing their own set of problems ranging from feeling lost and without purpose to suffering from a separation. With this, the four friends decide to go on another adventure, hoping to get a break from their daily struggles.
This novel is truly a breath of fresh air. It provides a new perspective that hasn't been thoroughly explored before. Oftentimes, trips with friends are associated with female friendships. However, this book totally flips that narrative. I find this enjoyable and interesting since it allows for a fresh way of portraying male friendships. The established "Man Mission" that the friends have formed is also quite paradoxical. This is because at its core, the masculinity is clearly shown. The friends engage in activities that show how manly they are. But, as the story unfolds, the emotions and feelings of each character are revealed. Man Mission is able to successfully demonstrate the idea that men can and should be vulnerable when they need to be. In terms of its overall structure, I can say that this novel is also written well. The words and sentence structuring in the story remind me of simpler times- of classic and old-time books. The importance of friendship is also heavily alluded in the storyline. This can be seen in the way the four friends find support in one another. I also love how each main characters are given a certain depth to their personalities. I also love how it captures that sense of growing older and the weariness and struggles that come with it. It shows that adults aren't indestructible, that growing older doesn't mean we can solve every problem that comes along.
My only problem with this book is on the way the female characters are portrayed. In my opinion, they lacked substance. However, this issue can be forgiven since the premise of the book revolves around the friendship between the four guys.
I'll give this novel a 3 out of 4 stars due to the uniqueness of its premise and its good storyline. The themes of friendship, vulnerability and family are also interwoven seamlessly and fit with one another. The writing style is also commendable and adds to the whole quality of the book itself. The character design also makes this book enjoyable and relatable.
I think this novel could be read by anyone. It would be an enjoyable read for people who love stories which are full of adventures that also deal with real world problems. Young readers might find the sentence structuring a bit boring and difficult to follow but it is manageable.
