The last years of high school of the narrator are filled with adventure and life-changing experiences, all of them which stem from his younger years and his relationship with D., his best friend. Both D. and the narrator develop a strong relationship that eventually fades through the years, but the connection between them is never really gone. The narrator through his intellectual curiosity discovers another realm, which he calls the aethereal realm, made up of unconscious conversations of people. Although at first the narrator considers it a construction of his own mind, he soon realizes how it may be real and have a certain influence in the physical realm.

After a few visits to the aethereal realm the narrator discovers how there is a connection between every person, an unconscious one, which creates this otherworldly place in which there are entities like gods. These gods can be composed of good-intentioned conversations and evil conversations which have a toll on the people that unconsciously generate them. The adventurous spirit and curiosity of the narrator lead him to experiment in this realm, which soon he discovers only threatens those people he loved very dearly. The narrator can go into this aethereal realm and even finds a way to influence people in the real world. His lonely travels become entertaining and educating but all of this comes at a very high cost for him. At his young age the narrator must be able to face a battle in this aethereal realm as hard as the one he must face in the real world to be able to protect himself and the people he cares about.

The Party Line by Dennis D. Gagnon is a drama/fantasy story filled with philosophical theories. From the prologue you are immersed into an adventure which only leaves you wanting for more. The importance of that intellectual curiosity from the narrator is an essential point of the author, you get that sense of questioning mainly focused on philosophical themes. The book is an attempt to marry philosophy with fantasy in a way that it entertains and generates a sense of understanding of the theories mentioned in it. The author is able to encompass that sense of friendship that we all have in our school years and how this becomes part of the foundation to our later years of life.

Even though there is a lot of mention of philosophical themes, like Buddhism, Nihilism, Freud, and metaphysics throughout the story I feel that sometimes it is way too superficial to completely understand and sometimes you end up a bit puzzled by them. But this is balanced in a very good way by the creation of this realm in which his party line theory of consciousness is explained and leaves you wondering how much truth there is to it. You get a very clear idea of how much the author values the questioning that occurs for the reader in the book, it is part of this intellectual curiosity that is crucial to the narrator.

The book is professionally edited and has very few errors. I rate the book four out of four stars. It is a book recommended for everyone but mostly for people who have interests in philosophy and like to dive into fantasy as well. There is profanity and violence encountered in the story.
