Review of Disasters To Dreams
To fail is to learn. This is what Chris Patrick shows in his novel Disasters To Dreams. Patrick explores numerous failures in his life. He is willing to open up about legal issues, being fired multiple times, and failed business endeavors. With all his failures laid out; he goes on to explore the beauty of it all. Presenting failure as the universe's way of getting us where we need to be while preparing us for future success.
Patrick was successful in his early years, however, he lost it all. He was almost homeless and admittedly sad and embarrassed about the state of his life. But I love the way he uses downfall to motivate and encourage. The narration of his own story along with testimonials from successful people gives hope and comfort. The text erodes the stigma of worthlessness that is attached to failure. The interaction of the text is another thing that I love. This is achieved through questions and tasks along the way which allowed me to face my own failures. How the author presents failure is rather unique and human. He also pays homage to individuals who contributed to his success, this is a wonderful touch as he did not achieve success on his own.
The author claims that the use of profanity helps to better explain his disasters. However I do believe that some readers might view its usage as too much, although in my opinion somewhat necessary to communicate the emotional aspect of the story. But I will admit that the extensive use can potentially deter some readers. It does not appear that it was professionally edited. The text has a few blank pages and grammatical errors. These issues did not affect my reading experience. I still found the novel easy to read and relatable.
I rate this novel 3 out of 4. Outside of the grammatical errors, the novel was a beautiful read. It was motivating and current. The author’s goal is to change the way we look at our failures, to expand what the road to success looks like and I believe that he did just that.
I recommend this book to persons who are having a hard time finding their path to success. This novel is for anyone who is feeling the cold sting of failure and just needs a bit of encouragement to keep going. Chris Patrick will change how you view failure which will change how you view success.
