In Vagabond by Mary A.J. Cecilia Harrow is the princess of Hell. After many years of killing people, eating souls, and sewing destruction everywhere she goes, she wonders if there is more to life. She escapes Hell again and ends up at an American high school. She finds herself entranced by one of the students and decides to stay. She begins to learn the benefits of humanity and to develop relationships with the humans at the school. Will her past catch up to her and ruin her newfound feelings of belonging or can she dare to dream of a future filled with friendship instead of violence?

This book kept me on my toes and I read through it fairly quickly. There was generally enough action and suspense to keep me turning the pages. I think that the main characters that we meet are well developed and easy to relate to. Most people had similar friends in high school or knew someone who was similar to each character (other than some of the paranormal aspects). I personally liked that it was set in Williamsburg because I love it there but also because it was an interesting juxtaposition to help remind us exactly how old Cecilia was and how long she was roaming the Earth before this story takes place.

There were a few slow spots where she is analyzing her divided love that I found a little dull and hard to get through. Also, I was nervous for a moment that it was going to turn into a reverse harem-type situation but I think she is going to make a choice. Should she go with the enigma that she was drawn to initially, the boy who draws out her humanity? Or should like to stick to like and she should pursue the boy who has turned himself into a demon?

I only found a few minor errors in editing, so I am happy to give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. This book held my attention and threw in some significant twists and turns that I did not see coming but that answered some of my questions from the beginning of the book. Also, this book ends on a serious cliffhanger, leaving me wanting more. I will definitely be reading the next book when it comes out.

I think this is a great choice for anyone that likes YA fantasy. There are some curse words (notably Hell and damn since it is a central theme in the book) and some gory scenes that may not be to everyone’s tastes but overall, I would highly recommend this book.
