Review of California: On the Edge of American History
California is mostly known for its fertile land as well as the mediterranean climate, which makes it easier for the citizens of this country to plant a variety of crops. But, Ronald Genini provides us with more information that serves as a history of California and what makes California such a rich country in terms of a variety of minerals, crops, and so forth.
In his reference book California: On the Edge of American History, Genini discusses the importance of California in the evolution of the United States. In this book, Genini discusses a range of facts, figures, and tales about people that are important to California's history. The author also highlights how important the governmental system was in the past because it allowed them to stimulate the economy by launching the Gold Rush and agreeing to trade with Europeans along the coast. As a result, he challenges California's native residents to take their time and choose leaders who will follow in the footsteps of the ancient leaders, allowing the economy to grow and more people to be spared from poverty and starvation. In essence, Genini indicates that the people of California must restore California to its former glory.
What I liked about this book was that it was well-written and well-researched. It’s very clear that the author wanted to write things that were relevant to each chapter and those that were facts, thus providing the readers with a lot of information when it comes to the history of California. For instance, the author included the history of gold mining, the manufacturing of crude oil, and how the Silicon Valley arose in California. I also liked the author's writing style. It was very simple, which made it easier for me to understand. I also liked that this book was well organized and in a logical way. I also liked the fact that this book was professionally edited, as I did not find any grammatical errors while reading. It shows that the author worked very hard to create a masterpiece.
What I did not like about this book was that the author did not include maps to support this book. Therefore, I felt like this book was just a draft that was still going to be re-written. With that said, I do not recommend this book to visual learners because, as much as it could help them to learn the history of California, they will also be bored from reading it without any pictures that would make the book interesting. What I also did not like about this book was that it was very long. Therefore, it would have been convenient if the author had separated the book into different volumes.
Therefore, I would like to rate this book at 3 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to people who want to learn more about California, including those who are not inhabitants of the state. I also recommend it to students who are studying History as well as Geography because I believe that it will help them in their studies and as a reference.
