Surprises are not my cup of tea…being caught unawares is shocking and perhaps exhilarating at the same time. So when I got to reading Working At The Warehouse by Jerry A. Greenberg, I made assumptions that it would be a laid-back and smooth-riding journey…it was not. I was surprised at every turn and the title of this book does not do justice to the action-packed story that it is!

The protagonist named Lew Thompson is your average Joe, an aging warehouse manager who goes through a most eventful period in his workplace that managed to overhaul his whole perspective on life and self. An unexpected delivery to the warehouse leads to a jostling series of happenings that just leave you winded at the speed at which they take place. As revelations unfold, the protagonist’s mind and those of his work allies stumble through various things that seem bizarre yet plausible. No one could have guessed it from the title but Jerry A. Greenberg had my mind in serious contemplation and my stomach in stitches with his candid humor. As the book comes to a close, the protagonist is left to ponder recent events after having an epiphany.

My eyebrows shot up with every turn of this book! After several pages it’s…POW! This action-packed literal rollercoaster was absolutely fun to read, yet it holds such a powerful message. The characters are vividly described and I could easily identify with each, quirks and all. Metaphorical language was sparingly and skillfully applied to bring out the underlying thread that runs through spiritual history in the hope of magnifying what the author wants us to realize. Despite the text needing some editorial work, Lew Thompson’s whirlwind journey offers a lot of food for thought, as it looks at religion from a stark point of view. The author has done well by laying bare the goings-on of the business aspect of religion, revealing how gimmicks can be misused.

A rating of 3 out of 4 stars is well deserved for Working At The Warehouse as it serves up so many unanticipated twists while proposing a worthy angle of scrutiny on faith.

This book should be read by young adults through to the elderly regardless of gender or spiritual preferences. It provokes in-depth thought on current religious events throughout the world and should spark productive debate on what belief in a higher power should look like or be practiced.
