E M P Honeymoon by Dorothy May Mercer tells a story of the discovery of a high-tech terrorist plot to attack the US by an American couple on their honeymoon in Honduras.

The newlywed Kelly and Tom have only been a short time on their honeymoon when Kelly heads out on a bus tour of the Island. Tom is on the water, on a dive boat, so Kelly is by herself when she stumbles upon a cutesy curio store with an unmanned register. Ready to pay for the items she's picked out, she determinedly searches the whole store for someone to give her money to, leading her to an off-limits door which she opens anyway. Opening that door starts her highly improbable but exciting and dangerous adventure.

Having a US senator as her brother makes some of the following shenanigans more believable. A few special agents and the CIA are thrown in for good measure. We are also given a glimpse into the situation on the terrorists’ side, with some background details and scenes showing their progress and mindset. We see that there are morally upright people even amongst the "bad guys", people that will strive to do the right thing at the risk of their lives.

The book is an interesting light read. Very light. The characters are not very fleshed out, just enough to move the story along. Most of the women are portrayed as strong and capable and quite sure of themselves. One of the best features for me was the interview with the Prof Kinney by Henry Haven-Harbinger, a talk show host. I liked how the author subtly hints at the type of show that should get top ratings and hold the interest of the American populace. A gentle nudge for us all to do better.

For the easy writing style, good plot line, likeable characters and almost complete absence of profanity I would add stars. It is not a very serious book, and while it is well edited, a few mistakes were noticed. In fact, it seems that as the book progressed, editor's fatigue set in as almost all the errors are found in the latter half of the book.

My rating for E M P Honeymoon by Dorothy May Mercer is 3 out of 4 stars. It loses one star because of the overly simplistic take on such a serious subject which I feel may put off some readers. Also, because in reading the book, you may be left with a sense of dissatisfaction stemming from the somewhat careless way the story is put together and the mixing of genres (science fiction, romance, spy thriller, etc.)

I recommend this book for readers looking for some quick entertainment or a relaxing beach day novel. It is not for serious lovers of intrigue and espionage tales. It may not be suitable for kids because of some sexual innuendo.

Overall, Dorothy May Mercer has written an excellent story which, while maybe not being at bestseller level, is certainly no loss to the world of books. It is a good story, but you will not be blown away.
