Review of East Wind, 2nd edition
East Wind, 2nd Edition by Jack Winnick is a thrilling novel that follows FBI agent Lara Edmond and Mossad agent Uri Levin as they work together to stop a terrorist threat. Lara had been working to uncover secret messages that terrorist cells used to communicate. These messages were hidden in seemingly innocent posts that appeared to be college homework assignments. Uri worked as part of a secret branch of the Mossad and was one of their best field agents. He was brought to the United States to work with Lara on the ongoing nuclear threat. A bomb was set off in the Marina del Rey harbor, and the radical Islamic group that took credit also claimed they had more bombs in other major cities. These bombs would be detonated if the United States continued to support Isreal. Will Uri and Lara be able to stop the bombs before they go off?
This book was filled with a surprising amount of detail. Winnick has extensive knowledge of nuclear engineering that was shared in digestible chunks throughout the novel. The extensive details made part of the book seem like a science lesson. However, I never felt overwhelmed as Winnick used simple terms that the average reader would be able to understand. This was my favorite part of the novel.
Winnick also portrayed the recruitment process for radical groups in an interesting light. He showed how children are picked at a young age and basically brainwashed into joining these groups. It was enlightening and terrifying at the same time.
I can't think of anything I did not like about this book. The story was engaging, and the characters felt alive and dynamic. I enjoyed the subtle romance sprinkled in. Lara and Uri had a well-developed relationship that added a lighter note to an otherwise intense plot. I didn't notice any grammatical errors; I believe it was professionally edited.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I can find no reason to take away a star as I can articulate nothing I disliked about this book. Readers interested in political thrillers focused on conflicts with the Middle East would enjoy this book. There is violence depicted and some strong language throughout the book. I would recommend that more sensitive readers should take that into consideration. However, this is an engaging book from start to finish. The action is nonstop but not overwhelming, and the romance sprinkled in adds a lighter note.
