Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under great skies is the first issue of the We are Voulhire series. This piece of enchanting sci-fi takes place in the kingdom of Voulhire where politics, magic and adventure rule the lands.
Matthew Tysz kicks off our adventure with a boy, Galen Bray, who is rescued from the land of the princes by his dying uncle through Rowan, an executor. The land of the princes is at war which was caused by king of the land when he gave his sons parts of the kingdom after which they would fight amongst themselves and consequently not pose a threat to him. Galen makes it to Voulhire, Magnum Caelum, to be precise and purposes to make a life for himself and continue his uncle's legacy by taking over the family business. In Voulhire, there are different towns with different lords in charge of them. Matthew Tysz gives focus especially to the town of Hillport where dark secrets, including the king's own, are hidden.
The king appoints a new lord, Eldus Alderman, over Hillport to try and improve the lives of the good people of the town and ensure the king's secret while there. The new lord and his family are ambitious to ameliorate this town and the lives of those who dwell in it. How Will the king's secret affect Hillport and the Alderman family? Will Eldus succeed in his quest? How will Galen Bray find his footing in this new land? I guess you will have to read to find out. The emotion, passion, betrayal, magic, secrets, powerplay and conspiracies are a guarantee that this book is an exemptional read.
A positive aspect that I must give kudos to Matthew Tysz for is the vivid description of; characters, from their physical appearance to their personal being and also the various settings where the plot takes course for example Hillport, Magnum Caelum and even Yamon soul. The author articulates structured use of magic in the text so that it is not so much that it makes the story childish, exaggerated or cliché, but just enough to ensure that the book is somewhat relatable and extremely enthralling. The fact that this book is exceptionally well edited is icing on the metaphorical cake.
Every bean, as we know, has to have its black. Being the masterpiece that it is, the book's flaw is that some of the characters in it are not well developed such as the mage in the mine, Midious Maido and a very few others.
All taken into account, I rate this book a perfect 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to everyone who wants to cross into the land of adventure and is a fan of sci-fi, magic and quite frankly, a good book.
