Review of Cynthia and Dan
Cynthia and Dan: Cyber War by Dorothy May Mercer is a book in the McBride series. However, this book can be read on its own. It tells the story of Cynthia, a bodyguard, trained fighter, and receptionist for Senator McBride, and her boyfriend, Dan, who is with the boys in blue at the Fairfax PD. At the beginning of the book, a drone lands at the White House, and everyone is perplexed as to the significance of that security-wise.
Also, Cynthia and her crew of cyber gurus just received an impending threat to the president’s life. This, together with the fact that she recently got acquainted with a guy who is not her boyfriend, is making her restless. Will she figure her life out in time to save the president? Find out!
There were many things I enjoyed while reading this book. Chief among them is that I found it to be informative. I learned about some cyber terminologies and how countries deflect cyberattacks on their software. The author took cognizance of the fact that his readers are not cyber experts, so he wrote the book in easy-to-read language. The plot was intriguing and captivating; I didn’t put down the book till I was done with it. The book is a short read and can be completed in one sitting.
The characters were well formulated by the author. I admired Cynthia's strength in doing her job and her vulnerability to her romantic partners. I love how the author introduced a second guy to create conflict in the relationship between Dan and Cynthia. This made Cynthia question the love she had for Dan in the first place. Even though the book relates to a serious issue, which is cyber terrorism, romance is an integral part of the storyline. This gave the reader a break from all the serious talk in certain scenes.
I would have preferred that some scenes in the book were given more pages, but this was not the case. It seemed the ending of the book was a bit rushed. However, this did not affect my enjoyment of the book. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was exceptionally well edited, as I found no errors. I recommend this book to lovers of sci-fi and thriller novels. I also recommend it to readers who enjoy female protagonists. Because of the explicit scenes, I would recommend it to a mature audience.
