Review of The Magician's Secret
Charles Townsend's novel, The Magician's Secret, mixes science-fiction and fantasy brilliantly. This book is the first in a three-part series called Illusions of Power. The storyline follows a young man named Delvin, who inherits materials to become a traveling magician. Delvin starts to notice that his magic tricks are becoming real, and he can control the thoughts and actions of those around him. Delvin struggles to understand this turn of events and finds himself in many precarious situations. Delvin gets mixed up in a war between nations and tries to use his newfound skills to bring an end to the violence. Can Delvin control his magic enough to survive and help bring about peace?
I enjoyed the author's imaginative storyline and ability to create a world reminiscent of times past. The setting is old-world, but in a place where magic is possible, with the correct elements in place. Delvin uses an unusual object to bring his magic to life, and I enjoyed discovering this trick throughout the plot. The author included plenty of action, plot twists, and nail-biting events. I couldn't put this book down because of the action and Delvin's likable character. The author beautifully developed the main characters, and each person was relatable.
I found a handful of errors within the book, which is my only dislike of the novel. Aside from these mistakes, I enjoyed the author's writing style. The author emphasized the old-world feel with his diction and narrative. I found the storyline easy to follow without being trite.
I rate The Magician's Secret 5 out of 5 stars. Although I found some errors, there were less than ten overall, so it did not impact my enjoyment of the story or my rating. I enjoyed the fantasy plot and the inclusion of magic in a general sense. Delvin's character as a magician was unique, and I found him likable in every aspect of his adventure. The author displays his imagination with the setting and relationship development between Delvin and the people he encounters. I think Townsend is an excellent writer for this genre.
I recommend this novel to readers interested in science-fiction and fantasy genres, specifically readers who enjoy the addition of magic. There was some violence within the plot, so I caution young readers. There is very little profanity or sexual content. Therefore, the book is appropriate for a variety of readers. Readers who enjoy historical fiction may enjoy this book. Although there are no factual historical references, the setting of this book is similar to old-world living and medieval wars. I can't wait to read the second and third books in the Illusions of Power series.
