“Life is like a large roll of cable of which some parts are used properly and some are thrown away, and then the cable comes to a sudden end.” (pg 515)

Joe finds Beth unconscious on the streets and helps her with fresh clothes, a bed, and food. He works in Provincetown as a stripper. Joe’s care and kindness create an impact on her. He helps her aboard a ship to Bermuda to start life anew. Some years later, Joe and Beth meet again in not one of the best of circumstances.

Geena receives an unexpected letter from Joe Tinkerman, a family friend. She rushes back to her house to read the letter. It tells her that her father is dead. The letter continues to reveal to her some truths and hidden past incidents. After reading the letter, Geena gives out a scream. This scream was not to mourn her dead father, but something about the letter made her unbearable. And thus, she gave out a loud shriek, loud enough to disturb all the neighbors. What kind of truth did the letter reveal to her?

Entanglement - Quantum and Otherwise is a remarkable novel by John K Danenbarger. When I started reading the book, it was as if the first chapter gave me one end of a tangled string, and I was gradually making my way towards its other end. This string has many characters entangled with each other, seemingly randomly.

I loved the story. Starting from the book’s cover page to its concluding chapter, it was nothing but excellent and commendable. The author kept the readers captivated and engrossed till the end of the novel.

It is a character-driven story, as each chapter is told from a different character’s point of view. At times, the story was hard to follow, and the events were confusing because of the ever-changing perspectives, but it is not reason enough for me to deduct a star. The author has written realistic, well-structured, and well-fleshed-out characters. Also, the author has thoughtfully woven the reasons for each character’s action in this immersive tale.

I loved the personality of Joe. He is kind-hearted, caring, and warm. I appreciated the fact that he helped Beth when she needed it the most. I also enjoyed reading about the time when Beth felt peaceful on the ship to Bermuda.

I had to read the book more than once to find clarity and clear my doubts. I could not follow some events on the first read, but I understood them after a second read. Once I had grasped the plot, I eventually looked at other details, like the music band called Abandoned House, which was mentioned in the book, and later there was a subtle follow-up during a very significant incident.

I rate it a glowing four out of four stars. It was exceptionally edited, as I did not notice any grammatical errors while reading. There is nothing I disliked about this book. But some readers might find it religiously offensive, as it contains a character of a gay ex-priest.

I recommend it to readers who would like to read a meaningful story that on each read offers a new insight into its characters. You should also read this book if you prefer books with dark undertones, books with a significant meaning behind its characters, and a puzzle-like story that needs to be put together.

Thank you for your great review! I wanted to read this book the first time I read its description and found out that it's a literary story and its main focus is the characters and not the plot (I had just read Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide which I really loved.). I still have it on my list, so maybe I'll get to it.

I suppose having a character-driven story was a must for a captivating entanglement.
It's definitely worth the read. Thank you for commenting C Janet! :tiphat:

I totally agree that the plot could be a little challenging to follow. I guess it is due to the structure of the story, in which events from different characters are sometimes out of sync. I believe that is one of the author's styles in building the story, especially to show the 'entanglement' happening among the characters.
