Review of Paris in the Springtime
Paris in the Springtime is a romance novel by Susan Aylworth that follows the life of Paris Cutler. Paris had to face many challenges throughout her life. She lost her father at a young age. When she was a teen, her mother got cancer and eventually lost her battle. Each time her family faced adversity, they left their big city home and traveled to the small mountain town of Destiny, California, to live with Gran and Aunt Jess. They always welcomed them with open arms and surrounded them with love and support during those tough times. Although Paris was a beautiful, slender brunette, she had grown into a sixteen-year-old introvert filled with anger. She hid behind a tough girl facade and only had one friend due to her prickly personality. High school was a chore until she met the gorgeous student teacher in her English class, Mr. Frantz. He noticed and encouraged her writing ability. Mr. Frantz took the time to nurture her writing talent in several ways, which guided her to find her future career. Unfortunately, her secret crush left at the end of that school year to pursue a teaching job. After finishing college, Paris landed a job as a technical writer in Sacramento.
Now in her mid-twenties, Paris hit an unfortunate occupational roadblock and retreated again to Gran and Aunt Jess’s home in Destiny. She needed to escape big city life for a few weeks and figure out her next steps. When she went to get a key to the house from Aunt Jess, who taught at the high school, she accidentally bumped right into a wall of muscle in the parking lot. It just happened to be Mr. Frantz! He was even more handsome than before! Greg Frantz was now the principal at Destiny High School. They chatted, and he recruited her to help write a grant for the school. Feelings started to develop between them as they spent more time together. After getting an offer for a job, Paris came to a fork in the road. Was it more important to have her dream job in a big city or to stay with her dream man in a small town?
I enjoyed many positive aspects of the book. The author has a commendable writing style. I flew through the pages, cheering for Paris along her bumpy road of life. Another strength was character development. Paris displayed much growth throughout the story and discovered new things about herself. Greg was a strong character with much to offer Paris. He also learned some important lessons along the way. I thought the plot was going to be predictable. However, it included some unexpected turns. I was pleasantly surprised by the ending of the book.
I only have one complaint about the book. I found many sentences that require text corrections. It contained spelling errors. There were also problems with word usage. In addition, there were some punctuation mistakes. Another round of editing would improve and polish the text. Therefore, I give Paris in the Springtime a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this book to teenagers and adults. Fans of contemporary fiction with familial and romantic relationships should add this to their book list. People who like to read about characters who overcome adversity may enjoy reading about the life of Paris Cutler. I look forward to catching up with Paris in the second book of the series, called Sunny’s Summer.
