"The Mission" by Tara Basi is a collection of short stories that take readers on a journey through peculiar and sometimes perplexing scenarios. The book kicks off with a gripping tale of Kevin's escape from a psychiatric hospital, where he was admitted under harrowing circumstances and discovered sitting for a month playing games with his deceased mother stored in a freezer. Mandy, the hospital receptionist, becomes infatuated with Kevin and concocts a daring plan to liberate him from the confines of the hospital.

Basi's narrative style is bold and unconventional, plunging readers into surreal situations that challenge conventional storytelling norms. The first story sets the tone for the rest of the collection, offering a blend of psychological intrigue and speculative fiction. However, while some readers may find this approach refreshing and thought-provoking, others may struggle to follow the disjointed narrative threads.

Indeed, some of the stories in "The Mission" are indeed weird and confusing, requiring occasional rereads to grasp their underlying meanings. While ambiguity and complexity can enrich a narrative, excessive convolution risks alienating readers who prefer more straightforward storytelling. Nevertheless, for those who enjoy quick reads with a dash of sci-fi flair, "The Mission" offers a stimulating escape into the realms of imagination.

One commendable aspect of the book is its meticulous editing, with the absence of errors throughout the text. This attention to detail enhances the reading experience, ensuring that readers can immerse themselves fully in Basi's unconventional universe without distraction.

In summary, "The Mission" by Tara Basi is a daring exploration of the human psyche and speculative fiction. While its unconventional storytelling may not appeal to all readers, those who appreciate thought-provoking narratives and are willing to embrace ambiguity will find much to admire. With its well-crafted prose and imaginative scenarios, "The Mission" earns a solid three out of five stars, held back only by its occasionally confusing aspects.
