Dorothy May Mercer's E M P Honeymoon turns a seemingly ordinary honeymoon into a chaotic virtual reality, bombarding the couple with an electromagnetic pulse. The book opens with discussions on how Kelly is into everything planned, while Tom is more of a free spirit. To successfully show the horrific change from an imaginary honeymoon state to the actual fight for survival, Mercer conveys a sharp contrast.

Senator Mike McBride, Kelly's brother, starts a new thread of political intrigue. He feels at home in the very government body that is in dire need of this EMP issue. We view national security as a burden on his shoulders, yet his sister's safety is what concerns him. This puts a spin on the relationship, which is depicted as being ignited by the struggle between family values and public or national interest. The battle scenes are quick and captivating, just like in a movie. Yet enough, Mercer does more than just fight and shoot. She delves into the psychological implications of the stressful context. We observe that Tom and Kelly are at different ends of the spectrum. Tom is mostly adapting and overcoming; Kelly is grappling with fear and self-doubt. This not only closes the gap between the theater scene and the audience but also humanizes the characters.

5 out of 5 stars for this one. The intriguing suspense and climax keep the book from being boring and hook the readers on the very first page and the last page. The plot, though interesting, may be incoherent for others. The editing was good. It could be a good idea to delve deeper into the character's motivations to this end.

If you are a fan of page-turners that combine romance fiction elements with an unconventional survival plot, you may find E M P Honeymoon a captivating read. When you need a perfectly balanced blend of genres or an extremely strong love story, you might consider looking for it somewhere else. Quite frankly? The best part I liked about it all.

EMP Honeymoon showcases the power of love and determination. The newlyweds' fight for survival is both inspiring and heart-wrenching.
