Review of Somawise
Somawise by Dr. Luke Sniewski is a practical book about how readers can learn from the wisdom our body has to offer in our daily lives. The author addresses three things when writing this book: first, holistic well-being; second, authentic change; and third, peaceful and harmonious relationships. The author notes that the answers to all these dwell within us, in our bodies, and that we need to reconnect with our bodies as there has been a great disconnect, which has made us dull to the lessons that the body gives us. After identifying the tools that we can use to reconnect with our bodies, the author then used the concluding three chapters to talk about how to connect the dots in Somawise.
Dr. Luke, who is a wellbeing coach and somatic therapist, is not shy about his love and worship of the body, and in the introduction, he even writes an ode to the body and encourages readers to worship the body. He discusses his own trauma and addiction to pornography and how he was able to overcome that addiction by following the practices in this book.
What I found most interesting about the book is its practical nature; it's not just a book that gives theoretical knowledge. The author shares his personal experiences in this book, showing how he was able to heal from trauma and follow the Somawise way of being. In giving the tools that the readers should use to reconnect with their bodies and learn what their bodies have to teach them, he also tells the readers his experiences using those tools, so they don't seem abstract or impossible to the readers.
I didn't find anything to dislike about the book. I found something unique about the numbering of the chapters. The chapters had a summary point and key takeaways to give the readers a summary of what the whole chapter was about and the important points to note. There were also action steps to follow to start the practice. The book is exceptionally edited.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because of the detailed knowledge in it. I recommend this book to those who are truly enthusiastic about change—those who realize that there is a need for change in the way they have been living and are reading to undertake the painful and uncomfortable process of reconnecting with their body. It's not just a literature book for you to read and gain knowledge from, but a practical guide to a new way of living.
