What the Pet Food Industry Is Not Telling You by Dr. Stephanie Krol is essentially a guidebook for pet owners to use to make informed decisions about the diets of their pets (primarily focused on dogs). The author is passionate about this topic, having nearly lost a beloved dog to what turned out to be a diet-related illness. It was honestly an easier and more informative read than I expected it to be based on the title. There is probably some important advice to be found there about judging books based on the information on the front.

For me, the best part of this book was how well-researched it was. I am a very evidence-driven person, and Dr. Krol’s regular callouts to studies, veterinary websites, and other high-quality sources were awesome. I didn’t love the formatting of the references section, as it was a bit hard to tell where one citation ended and the next began, but the content was great. The title of this book reads a lot like one of those banner ads on websites trying to sell turmeric powder, but it is extremely clear that Dr. Krol was meticulous in her research when writing this.

I also really enjoyed that the book didn’t try to present a one-size-fits-all solution for healthy pets. Instead, Dr. Krol recommends a species-specific approach that involves actually getting to know your pet and tailoring their diet to fit their individual needs. Again, this was a lot more insightful than I expected when I picked the book up.

There was room for improvement for sure. I am not a huge fan of the title, and the formatting in the references section could be cleaned up, but the editing was fantastic. I also think the book leans a little bit on what I think of as “scare-tactic” topics, like toxins. Overall, however, I was really impressed by the quality of the content. I have no choice but to give this book a glowing four out of five stars. I honestly believe every pet owner should read this book. Even if you ultimately don’t choose to follow Dr. Krol’s advice, it will help you get to know your pet and the industry better.

I liked the title and believed it would have topics of narcissism and toxic relationships, and how they affect us. What I didn't expect basis the title is the inclusion of the writer's views on US politics, in great detail.
