“Keys to Harmony” by Margalit Jakob revolves around the story of a woman named Margalit Jakob, a pianist struggling with depression. The story starts with Margalit sitting at the windowsill of her fifth-floor apartment in Jerusalem. She wanted to end her life, but was also afraid of the consequences it would bring with it. After contemplating for a long time, she imagines that she has already jumped from there and feels all the pain it will bring with it. After that, she mentally frees herself from all the pain and sleeps peacefully, thinking nothing worse can happen after this.

After that, we are taken into the past, learning how she ended up like this in the first place. She was an aspiring pianist who came to Jerusalem to fulfill her musical dreams, but her dreams were crushed the moment she realized people weren’t the same as she had thought them to be. She was faced with harsh rejections, cruelty, and rudeness, which slowly made her drift into depression. Even though she acted like nothing hurt her, deep down, it was slowly crushing her self-esteem. The book is about her journey to find herself. Will she be able to discover her true self, or will the outside world crush the dreams of the 10-year-old girl inside her, who had dreamed of becoming a musician and sharing her artistic talent with the world through music?

What I loved about the book was how real it felt; it was so well written that I felt like I was living her life. I can surely tell the writer knows what depression actually feels like. I have gone through this myself, and I could deeply resonate with the protagonist. I know how people tend to crush your dreams and send you into a hole of self-doubt and anxiety from where ending your life is easier than finding the right path to get out of your misery. There was nothing I didn’t like in this book; it was beautifully written. I couldn’t find any errors in it. It was professionally edited. I’ll give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Because it offers strategies for coping with depression, I suggest it to everyone who is experiencing it.
