I will be rating this book a 3 out of 4 on the rating factor but a 4 out of 5 on the total rating scale because to me reading this book opened my eyes to what went on for people in the past where racism was so much more prevalent! This is my review for Deceptive Calm by Patricia Skipper. Normally books like this aren't my go-to, but after listening to it read, I actually liked this book. It gave me a different point of view of how Black people lived in the 1900s. It contained a lot of language pertaining to that era. I also really enjoyed how descriptive the author was in describing everything—the people, the buildings, everything. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters' backgrounds as well as their actions that defined them. And everything that Vanessa went through just made me feel for her.

It also made me cry when I found out about Vanessa's baby; finding out about a health issue is never a good thing, especially when it's a child. I really got mad about everything the husband did; he really enveloped sort of the villain character of the book. At every next chapter, I was waiting and hoping for the best for Vanessa, and even the end of the book I didn't expect. I was totally blown away by everything that happened in this book. This book has opened my eyes to read more books about life like that way back then. I think everyone who loves a good book about the point of view of what life was truly like back then and who wants to sort of experience it for the first time, reading Deceptive Calm is the first step and the first definite, I'd say, in anyone's reading log.

There is some heavy talk in this book, so definitely keep an eye out for that when reading or listening to it, but if you can get past that, it's a really well-thought-out book that I heavily enjoyed. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a history buff or even someone who wants to expand their reading genres. They'll like it; you won't be disappointed.
