That’s what Ed said by U A Dumas is a fictional story about a man named Leslie, who is a retired schoolteacher and principal. The story captures Leslie’s life from being a happy child to an old man with a bunch of stories to tell.

The story is written like a memoir. The reader would feel like they are reading a memoir or a journal of an old man with loads of stories from his young days. The story is set in America, and Leslie takes the readers through his life as a child. It contains several characters, including his favorite grandma, his siblings, friends, parents, girlfriends, and so on. Leslie shares the moments from his childhood – both good and bad. He takes the readers through his thoughts and outlooks on life. The reader will be able to see the evolution of Leslie from a naive child to a stupid teenager to a man who has many philosophies about life.

I like the journal-type writing of the story. It brings the readers very close to the characters. The author was able to take the readers through the life of Leslie in an intimate way with the writing. The happy times from Leslie’s young days with his siblings and friends were very pleasant to read. It was also nice to read his thoughts on each incident in his life and what he learned from these events. However, sometimes I think the flow of the story was a miss as it goes from one moment in Leslie’s life to an entirely different situation, and later brings it back to the previous moment.

Reader discretion is advised as the story contains profanity, descriptions of inappropriate physical relations, parental abuse, and scenes of an adult nature.

The editing work is good, and I did not find many editing errors in the book. Considering the negative I mentioned, I give this book a four out of five rating.
