Have you heard of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease? Stephen Hawking, one of the most brilliant minds of our time, lived with this condition for over five decades. ALS is a progressive neurological disease that causes the gradual loss of motor functions, leading to paralysis. "Always Losing Something: A Novel of Hope, Heartbreak and Soaring Optimism" by Max Green is a remarkable fictional story that draws from real-life experiences. Max Green is the pseudonym for Marcus Gerbich, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2016. Since then, Marcus has been committed to raising awareness about this underfunded disease, sharing his journey with the hope of finding a cure in the next decade.

The story is set in the year 2030, in a world with advanced scientific technology that offers new ways to make life more tolerable for those living with ALS. In the novel, we follow the story of Max Green, a gifted and aspiring football player whose dream of playing in the English Premier League is cut short by an injury. Unshaken by the setback, Max transitions into a career as an investment banker. However, tragedy strikes again when he loses an arm in the 9/11 attack. As if that weren’t enough, Max is then diagnosed with ALS, which marks yet another heartbreaking chapter in his life. Despite the devastating effects of ALS, both Marcus and his fictional character Max embody resilience and optimism. Marcus uses his own experiences to paint a picture of hope, reminding ALS patients that a cure could be closer than we think and that there is still joy to be found, even in the face of great challenges.

This story is a powerful exploration of perseverance, blending fantasy with the harsh reality of living with ALS. It offers readers a unique perspective on what it takes to keep moving forward, despite losing so much. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an inspiring and motivational read, as ALS is a condition that needs much more awareness and support. The novel’s emotional depth and futuristic vision make it both thought-provoking and hopeful. There is nothing I dislike about this book; the editing is flawless, and the story is beautifully written. With that in mind, I rate this book 5 out of 5. However, it does contain some unnecessary profanity, so if you’re sensitive to that, reader discretion is advised.

An unusual premise for a book. The fact that it draws from real-life experiences makes it more relevant and a reminder to society for support mechanisms and an inclusive attitude.
