Rose Alone is written by Sheila Flynn DeCosse.

The story begins with Rose, who is a fourteen-year-old young Acadian girl. She lives with her family in the eastern part of Canada. Her family consists of her parents, two brothers, and her little sister. They have built themselves a nice home with a large garden that produces lots of food. They speak French and are French Neutrals.

In this time in history, the English are going to war with the French. Rose's family has been ordered to leave their farm and board a ship. They do not know where the ship will sail. All they know is the governor has ordered all Acadians to leave Belle Isle, Nova Scotia, Canada. The British soldiers show up at her house and give the orders. The family does not know where the older son, Pierre, is. They are not given time to wait for him and are forced to pack up one cart with the belongings it can hold. That is all of their possessions they are allowed to take on the ship.

But Rose has an idea and loads a smaller cart with fruits and vegetables and other small possessions. Her mother drives this cart, and her little sister, Madeline, sits on the produce. Rose is with her father and younger brother, Jacques, on the larger cart. To her horror, Rose notices that her mother has gotten far ahead of them and is directed to board a boat with her sister. Rose and her father and brother cannot catch up. So the family is separated.

The author continues this story in great detail. I like how she develops the characters over time. This is a good story about not being able to control your own destiny. It is about what it must have been like during the French and English War. The prejudice against people who are different than you.

This book is riddled with lots of grammatical errors and lacks proper punctuation in many places. This makes it hard to follow the story in some places. It is a good, solid story but could have been edited better. It is for this reason I give this book a 3 out of 5-star rating.
