Waterworks is a short story about the Iranian government secretly infiltrating America’s water sources. It follows the Americans as they quickly navigate the attack, and the Iranians while they continue to try and strike America’s water treatment plants.
I enjoyed the intro to this book as you follow a water-treatment plant worker through his day. Eventually, he notices some suspicious activity in the animals around the plant. He alerts this suspicious activity to his bosses, and soon enough the government gets involved to send their best agents on an undercover mission to Iran full of twists and turns.
This book was easy to read as a stand-alone and I felt I didn’t need any more context for the main characters other than what was given to me at the beginning of the book when the characters were originally introduced. It is quick to get to the point, but a bit slow to get to the climax of the story. After reaching the high point of the book it does pick up, and from there it’s one twist after another!
I was very intrigued by the character the book opens with and how his point of view would progress through the book, but unfortunately, his character didn’t get much “screen time” after the first few chapters. I would’ve liked to see more of how the treatment plant he worked at handled the situation.
By the end of the book, I was quite interested in seeing how the problem would be solved, and though it was, I found myself with a few more questions than answers. At times there is a bit of clunky writing and a few minor plot holes, such as problems that seem to get solved way too fast, but nothing you can’t read through.
Overall, I rated this book a 4 out of 5. It was edited quite well, and I didn't notice any typos or errors. However, due to the fact that the problems the characters had were solved much faster than you would expect, and the story had a slow pace to start off with, I didn’t give it a perfect 5 out of 5 rating.
I did enjoy having multiple points of view and seeing how different characters handled similar situations, especially when one of them is a woman who doesn’t need saving and instead is the one saving her partner! The premise of the story was interesting enough, though, and had a few good plot twists. I would definitely read another book by Jack Winnick.
