The Magician's Secret by Charles Townsend describes the story of a young man, Delvin, who is accused unjustly of committing a murder. He is nearly killed because of it, but he is saved just in time.

Having been established as innocent, Borlock, his deceased teacher, gives him magical items. Delvin then relocates to a town known as Hengel in an effort to begin afresh and be a magician.Yet, this is not so easy; he is involved in a tangle of magic, secrets, and political issues.

He makes new friends, has a magic show, and soon discovers that there can be war between two kingdoms, Hengel and Argent. Delvin also learns that there is somebody practicing magic and manipulating the minds of people and making the fight between kingdoms happen.

Assisted by other people and Princess Jarla, Delvin attempts to prevent the war and combat the people with magic due to their evil intentions.I enjoyed this book so much. It was just sufficient in action, mystery, and magic in order to keep me with it. I loved the fun and the risk of magic usage, which made the story seem real despite being fantasy.

Delvin and Greg (and later Jarla) were friends, and it was meaningful to have a human touch on the story. There were a few slow sections in the middle, but the book got exciting again at the end, and some serious surprises were in store.

I enjoyed the message concerning the application of power in a positive manner and not to harm others. The language used was plain and simple to understand. The characters were believable, particularly the character of Delvin. He transforms a lot throughout the narrative; he was scared, and he turned out to be courageous. I found nothing to dislike in this book, so I'd rate it 5 out of 5 stars.

The Magician's Secret is an excellent fantasy and adventure book that can be read by middle school students and high school students. It is simple to read and understand, yet there are also deeper thoughts such as fairness, friendship, and right choices. It fits all adolescents who like magical tales and lessons on life and a hero that overcomes hard adversities.
