Michael du Preez's Justice of the Wild takes readers to rural South Africa, composing a exciting story of two high school boys, Rampha and Paul, who find themselves in an unexpected and dangerous adventure. The novel begins with a violent storm that inadvertently enables six lions to escape from a wildlife preserve. Rampha and Paul witness the poaching of the animals which initiates a chain of events that highlights the boys’ courage and resourcefulness.
Upon witnessing the crime, the boys promptly report the incident to their school administration, who then contact the local authorities. Later that evening, Rampha and Paul embark on a late-night, unsanctioned outing and spot the poachers' distinctive truck. The boys devise a plan to follow it, intending to report its location to the police. Unbeknownst to the boys, their bold plan has been discovered by the poacher. He formulates a counter-plan, luring the boys back to his isolated ranch where he kidnaps Rampha and Paul, intending to hold them captive until his lucrative and illicit hunting operation is complete and the lions are successfully tracked and killed.
Du Preez excels at developing the characters making Rampha and Paul relatable protagonists. Beyond the compelling characters, the author demonstrates a remarkable talent for storytelling, maintaining a pace that can keep readers’ attention. One of the most outstanding elements of the novel is du Preez's descriptions of the lions. He brings these beautiful animals to life providing vivid imagery that allows the reader to visualize their grace and power.
It's important to note, however, that Justice of the Wild does not shy away from the harshness of its subject matter. The book contains several graphic scenes depicting violence against both animals and people. While these moments are central to the story’s plot and underscore the brutality of poaching, they may prove triggering for very young readers or anyone particularly sensitive to gore and violence.
Overall, Justice of the Wild is an interesting and entertaining read. It’s an exciting tale of bravery, justice, and the impact of wildlife poaching. This novel would certainly interest both younger and older readers alike who appreciate an adventure with strong morals.
