Review of Breaking the Mold: Remodeling your Way to Success
Coming from an economically poor background, Fabian managed to accomplish the ‘American Dream’ and compiled his experiences and lessons in his book. “Breaking the Mold: Remodeling Your Way to Success” by Fabian Videla is a handy book for entrepreneurs in all lines of work. The author’s journey begins in childhood as he takes on a variety of jobs, right from working on the family farm. He goes on to establish a successful business of his own. The book gives the reader a loose framework to guide them on their own journey.
The book is divided into chapters with a summary called “Lessons of Success” at the end of each chapter. There are 67 such chapters. Each chapter has an anecdote or a certain experience that ingrained the lesson into the author’s mind. I like the personal touch that can be seen throughout the book. It keeps the reader engaged. The lessons are not only related to business but also about not forgetting your roots, learning from your elders, empathy, constant self-improvement, etc. He exhibits the importance of all these values in the context of his business. The author owns a construction company, due to which all his economic examples are related to that industry, but the basics are the same for any industry.
I like the way the author speaks about profits. Profits can be considered ‘greedy’ by some people, but ultimately, to run a business, you require profits. Your profits ensure excellent customer service, leading to customer satisfaction. This in turn gives you a reputation as a reliable business, leading to more customers. The author stresses all of this, along with knowing the value of your services and communicating the same to your customers firmly. While a few of these lessons might seem common, they’re absolutely important ones that businesses fail to learn.
The author conveys all this with a mix of sarcasm, humor, and reality checks. I like the writing style as the book does not get complicated. Although the book has a few editing errors, it does not hamper the reading. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. I did not dislike any aspect of the book and enjoyed reading it. While it is most helpful for entrepreneurs, especially those who are interested in the construction industry, the book can be read by anyone doing business.
