Review:
I've never before used any version of audio books and therefore was delighted with how much ease the app presented. Both the app and the book gets 4 of 4 Stars. The Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead is a fantasy romance laced with some adventure, drama and some action. The reader follows the main character as dhampir Rose Hathaway and her Moroi life-friend and "bond mate" Lissa Dragomir.
I know you may be thinking "Oh great. Another vampire story. It'll either be a Twilight or Trueblood knockoff." You are completely wrong! This is an entirely new and intriquiet story and plot. It even has some major politics (after all, a teenage Princess whonisbtheblaatbof her name can't simply escape court.
In a world that reflects our own the secret society of Dhampir are tasked with training and protecting the elite and royal Moroi from cannibalistic (I use this term loosely) strigoi. Few other take this dedication as seriously as Rose who will do anything to protect her best friend Lissa. Even if it means spiriting the Princess away- training twice as hard and humiliatingly as her classmates surpass her in their absence.
As in all great stories, not everyone is out to protect the the princess. Rose must tackle (physically) her dreamy trainer with whom she feels a strong attraction to and get to the bottom of who is leaving cryptic and bloody notes and "dying animal gifts" for Lisa. "Gifts" that Lisa can't help but try to bring back to life. And as if High school wasn't difficult enough for a teen (who has to deal with hair and clothes drama) Rose also struggles to understand her own secrets and must try and understand the growing peculiarities of Lisa's own unheard of and secretive power.
This book almost was lowered to four stars- even maybe three in the beginning. The immediate world building takes time to finalize though once done- is easy to imagine. Our "beloved" characters have the average teenage priorities that may drive the reader a little mad. We really don't care what nail color or dress color who is wearing to seduce who. Rose, plays well into the stereotypical and hot misunderstood girl with a no-nonsense policy with bullies- throwing fast punches and even faster verbal comebacks when she isn't busy flirting with the male population.
Lisa seems to act as Rose's counterweight. Being much more open minded Lisa is friendly to the point that she often becomes a victim. Rose comes running and sometimes literally "crashing" to her rescue until soft-voiced and kind hearted Lisa talks her down.
While this set up may have made for a pretty average and predictable reading, the growth of the characters is admirable even if one book (thought the series explores the depths of each character to fuller extents. As the book progresses Rose begins to realize the more important aspects of life, and with the help of the smoldering Dmitri (queue the swooning) Rose quickly learns that the training and glory of killing strigoi is not as glamerous and exciting as it seems to hero-worshipping students. Especially when you can't consider yourself a hero for killing your own friends and fellow classmates turned strigoi.
I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy a strong female lead (who is not without flaws) that may start out shallow but evolves into an amazing woman with the help of a real best friend, a forbidden love and a lot of action. While there is no erotica, I do suggest it to lovers of that genre as well, because when the love unfolds in a story this beautiful you can't help but be enraptured. I may have jumped a little ahead of myself too, though. While this story does contain a lot of character growth (physically and mentally) it sets a stage for even more adventure with the rest of the series.
This is my first review so please wish me luck, kindly help with corrects and guide me into more knowledgable directions for future reviews. I did try and make corrects and edits but doubt it difficult to do so on an IPhone Notepad. I lack a computer so auggestionsbare even more welcomed.
Thank you!
