Many Americans lead busy lifestyles that make it hard to find time to sit down and read. With Audible by Amazon, an audiobook subscription service, these constantly occupied Americans have found the answer. With over 180,000 audio titles and multiple plans to choose from, Audible has an option for just about every listener. Whether you want to listen to a New York Time’s Bestseller or a book narrated by Kate Winslet, there are plenty of options to choose from.
As a subscription service, Audible has you covered. There is a one book per month plan for $14.95, or two books per month for $22.95. That is not to say you are limited to one or two books, but instead you get a credit or two each month for a new audiobook. If credits for audiobooks are simply not enough, Audible also grants subscribers 30% off other audiobooks. I cannot think of a print book subscription service that offers that option. I cannot think of a print book subscription service at all. If you happen to not like your subscription and decide to cancel, you still get to keep all of your purchased audiobooks. That is a great opt-out clause for those who want to try the free trial, which comes with 2 free audiobooks.
When it comes down to listening to your book of choice, Audible has a plethora of options like increasing/decreasing the listening speed, 30 seconds forward/backward buttons, a sleep timer, etc. Audible strives to make the listening experience as pleasant as possible and does a fairly good job of it. Honestly, the listening speed does not make any sense to me. The 1x speed is just fine and the .75x sounds like I am listening to William Shatner read, but I guess some people like that option. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. I personally cannot think of a reason for someone to listen to an audiobook at the 3x speed setting (except for maybe as a joke), but the option is given to the listener if they want it. My personal favorite setting was the sleep timer. I like to read before I go to bed and with the sleep timer I could set the amount of time I wanted the player to go until it shut off. I found it was a relaxing way to wind down the day. With all of the options Audible gives the listener, it simply is hard to not find a setting perfect for the individual.
While I personally am not keeping my subscription because I prefer to read my books, I am buying my dad a subscription so he can listen in the car. People like my dad, overworked and underpaid, are the perfect audience for an Audible subscription. I would recommend this service to people who like to read but either have a hard time reading themselves or are too busy to sit down and read. Audible is great for the reader who is constantly on the move. Due to the versatility of audiobooks, the listener can download their current book to the Audible app and listen just about anywhere. Say goodbye to excuses not to read and hello to audiobooks.
Overall, I would give Audible 4 out of 4 stars because the subscription gives the listener the best audiobook experience. Even if you are not the biggest audiobook fan, you should give Audible a shot. You may be surprised by how well you like it.
