Merikh's Daughter by Gabriela M. Sanchez

This book is about a teen girl who is swept from one world to another. She then finds herself thrown into a war for all humanity. Through a confusing set of events she discovers she is not who she grew up thinking she was. She struggles with her identity. Alex is a somewhat youngish 17-year-old-soon to be 18 with insecurities and an inability to actually make strong decisions. I found her maturity level to be more in line with that of a 14 to 15 year-old. By the end of the book Alex is proclaimed a leader. I am simply puzzled.

Alex Seemed caught up in a whirl of life altering changes. She grasped at any suggestion she could wrap her fingers around. Alex has many regrets and feels at fault when all the bad things happen. It felt awkward when Dominic comes to her room and she fights him, yet at the same time she instantly obeyed everything he told her to do. She didn't express enough fear of Dominic when he entered her room. The same happened when the evil Merikh ordered her about. When Jonathan told her what to do she followed his instructions. Henry told her what to do, and she did. It was difficult to understand whether she was weak and a follower or if these people had placed some magical hold over her. She seemed too willing fall into line with whatever she was instructed to do, no matter whom the instructions came from. I had the feeling that had Jonathan not have been around to rescue her, there is no telling where she would have ended up. She chose good over evil, but it felt as though she only chose that path because Jonathan took her away, certainly not because she actually made a choice. I did not see Alex as a strong protagonist.

The basis of the story is good. I like that good and evil battle. Evil tries to destroy good but good prevails. However, I felt it lacked in substance. I didn't feel as though I could really get to know the characters. I would have liked to see more character development and more world building. Battles were lacking excitement and emotions were minuscule. For example there is a battle and Alex sees blood, a few swords cross and, and, and what? The battle is over. The emotional moments felt stilted and awkward.

I presume that since this was book one of a series there will be other books. Maybe this book was really .5? It felt more like a long synopsis to me.

I don't want to downplay the basic story-line. I think it was unique and has potential to be great. I think the love interest in the book could be developed a great deal and I expect that perhaps in the next book there will be a love triangle, maybe. I found myself longing for more from the characters as I read, even the evil ones. There were wording, spelling and grammar issues as well. I believe I could have really liked this story a lot. I would give this book 2 out of 4 stars.
