Title: Of the Woods
Author: Dennis Sanchez
Genre: Children's Fiction/Classical Retelling
Synopsis: The Wizard of Oz meets Pinocchio in this fun short story for all ages!
When three wooden puppet children find themselves at a loss when their parents are stolen they turn to the detectives Dorthy, Toto, and Scarecrow for help.
I give Of The Woods 3 out of 4 stars. The only reason being that in the beginning there were a few scenes that may not be appropriate for the targeted audience. Things such as implied sexual intimacy or emphasis of women's bodies. As nothing really happens, I figured it was only a 1 star problem.
I decided to read this book for two reasons.
1) I've previously read another book from this author and really loved it so I was very happy to see this listed in the review form.
2) I always love a good fantasy retelling and anything about siblings; both of which are contained in this book!
The story itself is quite clever, not only does it combine two well known and beloved children's tales but it also weaves in and references many others. Having always loved the classics I was overjoyed to see them all bounding around in fantastical chaos in the streets of this book! With the overall feel of Alice in Wonderland but with more modern language resembling a Rohld Dahl book, it's all one big romp through the pages!
The plot was simple and... well childish but, being a child's book, that was to be expected. I enjoyed that it was, at least, not demeaning to children's intelligence like many children's books are today. Rolling and tumbling with fun, adventure, mystery, and much silliness, this was a great little read!
The characters were both humorous and entertaining. While they do seem to lack as much development as would be preferred, this is mostly due to the shortness of the book itself. Taken into consideration it's small size, the characters are well worked and thoroughly enjoyable! From the bickering siblings to the bumbling detectives and then round to the rest of the interacting cast; everyone (and thing) had their part to play and carried their characters well. I will state that the parents annoyed me though. They were constantly used as a plot device to create awkwardly borderline inappropriate scenes that, as a caretaker of children and what they read, I really didn't appreciate. Even so, I did enjoy this book and would suggest it to all lovers of children's classics!
