Naupaka Blooming: A Hawaiian Reincarnation Romance By J. L. Eck
Naupaka Blooming is a great reincarnation romance about a Hawaiian princess named Leilani Kekoa and a commoner named Kanoa, who is a master hula dancer, and their correlation to the myth regarding the petals of the Naupaka flower. The myth talks about how the Naupaka flower only grows with half of its petals because two destined lovers died lonely deaths apart from each other, one on the mountain and one in the ocean. The curse placed on the flower can only be lifted, allowing it to grow with all its petals, when the two destined souls are reunited in love in another life.
The story follows the reincarnated forms of the two lovers in present day life as Liz and Aaron. Liz moves from California to Hawaii after her great grandmothers passing to live in her great grandmothers cottage following her great grandmother’s wishes left in her will. Liz is to live in the cottage for two years before she can do anything else with it. Liz has never had the chance to meet her great grandmother because of a big family fall out that is not ever mentioned. While adjusting to her new life Liz goes through some trying times with her love life, work, and even experiences a near drowning incident that leads her to a group of individuals’ who help her gain memories of her past life and a new outlook on life. She also has a disorder called Alopecia that leads her to being insecure about herself. During this time she also has problems with her new boss who is the reincarnated version of the man who caused the deaths of Liz and Aaron in their past life. She has to deal with this at her new job as well as these crazy memories surfacing through dreams that she does not quite understand.
Things I really liked about this book were the development of the main characters in their present day lives, the story line was easy to follow, and the author did a good job at describing what life would be like living in Hawaii. I never felt like this book became boring at any point and I actually could not put it down. The author did a great job at writing the story so that the reader would not want to put it down. There was also a lot of Hawaiian history written into the story, which I found very interesting. I also really liked how the author painted the scenes through out the book describing the land and the plants growing on the island. I was able to temporarily escape to the island myself through this book.
I did come across a few minor errors where words such as I or me were left out or words were repeated. This was more toward the end of the book and could be easily missed if you are a fast reader. I felt that it did not take away from the story though.
With that being said, I feel that it is safe to say that I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed this story and I feel many others will as well. There is no specific age group or setting of people that I feel the story would specifically target because I feel that it would appeal to a variety of readers. I would definitely recommend this book to others and look forward to reading more from this author.
