Title: Dear Thailand: A Love Story
Author: Diane de Simone
Genre: Non-Fictional/Inspirational
Synopsis: Dear Thailand: A Love Story is the account of the Author's travels to and from Thailand. Culminating what she learned and comparing with what she knew, she finds her eyes opened to the beauty of life. This is a story of a journey and awakening, a story of the meaning behind life and death, a story about love.
I give Dear Thailand: A Love Story 4 out of 4 stars. I couldn't possibly love this book any more! The true account of a woman, fed up with the industrial rat-race and dropping a world of knowledge to explore the unknown in search of peace. She walked a path many have dreamed of but few have dared and found fantastic rules of life along the way. I'm a Christian myself but I found many of the things she learned from the people in this book, be they Buddhist or Muslim or other, were applicable to all religions.
The writing style is beautiful. I was drowning in the descriptions of lushes fruit weighing down laden branches and the vibrant colors of the little island. The wording is simple and yet, poetic, leading the reader to a dreamy state of longing to stand on a beach and listen to the soft crash of the waves on the sand. The culture is explored from a foreign view making it relatable and understandable. There was even use of many Thai words making this a learning, as well as insightful, experience.
The people described in the story are as real as the narrator. They are not helpful teachings that simply pass through the story but relationships that stay. I felt I came to almost know many of them due to Diane de Simone's loving way of describing and referring to them.
Overall, Dear Thailand: A Love Sory is one of the most inspirational and beautiful stories I've read in a long time. It will appeal to the young and old of heart. From those wishing for a cultural experience to those seeking escape from the hectic run-around life of a modern world, Dear Thailand has something for everyone (though children would probably find it boring). There were a few small typos and formatting errors I encountered while reading the Kindle ebook but these did not take away from the book at all. This is a highly recommended read!
