Carpool To Salt City by Youssef Ahalla
Carpool To Salt City is a collection of poems written by Youssef Ahalla. The poems are beautiful. Each poem focuses on something different. The authors words speak to your soul and allow a piece of you to open up that you did not know was there.
The first poem is one of my favorites in that it has beauty and sadness in it. It speaks of a war that has been fought and lost by a group of young men. A young girl is offering flowers to those who are returning and mothers are preparing graves for their lost sons. This speaks to my heart in that I know so many who have died in order for us to maintain our freedom. The girl in this poem is one of few who acknowledges the men while others continue on with life.
The second poem is on a lost love for a man who volunteered to teach the young children of the community. He went to school to do so but dropped out to join the army to fight against people with whom they had not been enemy’s with before. The young man known as Paul is dead and his love before he left who is married to someone else signs for his body remarking on his sarcastic smile he carries even in death.
Another poem that stuck out to me was the Five Color Poem where the author reminisces on a box of colored chalk received for a fifth birthday gift. This is when the author first discovers the hidden talent of writing poetry with in. The poem describes the things written on to release the words with in but the author becomes poisoned after ingesting the chalk. The poison represents the words that cannot be freed from within.
I really enjoyed this short read. Poetry is something of a refresher to me and allows me to look at the world from a different point of view. I felt that Youssef Ahalla did a great job at providing an outlet to expand ones mind with his work. I was swept into the wording with various emotions. The way the author uses words to bring a story into life is amazing. The author speaks of strong topics in his work and gives a different view of those topics, views in which we as Americans do not stop to acknowledge. For this I give his work a 4 out of 4 stars. The author encourages me with his writing to read more of his work.
