Have you ever felt like you were dragging yourself through your life, trying to find a sense of accomplishment, and knowing that there was none where you were headed? The sinking feeling like, “So this is all there is, huh?” keeps popping into the back of your mind like a hammer slams a nail into the wall, and you feel defeated. Stuck.
Well, Scott Hughes addresses these feelings in his book, Achieve Your Dreams Why You Don’t and How You Can. He tells us how people from our childhood crushes our dreams. That the only way to make our dreams come true is to stop listening to those who actively break our spirit, and listen to that inner voice who wants more. To succeed we must be willing to face our inner self and acknowledge that we want, no, that we need more and we deserve to go for more and achieve our goals. He reminds us of others who failed and then succeeded, such as Oprah Winfrey or Michael Jordan. Scott encourages us to not only go for our dreams but to also follow through in completing them.
While at times I may have felt that some points were repeated several times, maybe more than necessary, I also understood the reasoning behind repeating that people fail at their goals, but achieve them later if they are willing to put in the work. Not only is it true, but sometimes people need to hear it. However due to the repetitiveness, I am giving this book a 3 out of 4 stars.
What I found especially inspiring were the six commandments at the end of the book. They really drove home the point about how the sacrifices we make now instead of focusing on our goals needs to be addressed in a better manner. If we have time to go out and buy coffee, we certainly have time to focus on writing. Well, if we are willing to sacrifice the drink for the time to write, it is. If we never give up on finishing our books and publishing them, then it will happen, because we make it happen. Along with a few others just as empowering as the rest.
Overall, I found that this book pulled at my heartstrings, bringing up the exact reason why I am not working on my own dream of writing a novel, and why I should be. Since that was the intent of this book, I believe that anyone else who needs a reminder of why they should write or follow any dream should also take the time to download the book. It’s worth the read. It’s a good reminder that we should do what our heart wants us to. I felt vindicated and empowered by the author’s words and I want others to feel the same emotions I did.
