The Banned Book About Love by Scott Hughes gained its changed name from its recent ban on Amazon. The short, opinionated book talks about Brock Turner and the idea behind rape, hate, and love. The Brock Turner case is about a college student that was convicted of brutally raping a woman behind a dumpster. He was sentenced to jail for six months and was released after three.

Hughes talks about what happened to Brock Turner and how people reacted to him afterwards. Throughout the piece, Hughes makes it known that he is not condoning what Brock Turner did or what other criminals do, especially in regards to rape. What he does try to explain, though, is how he loves people no matter what. Hughes explains that what Turner did was wrong but he also seems to sympathize and defend him by saying that he was so drunk that if someone tried to have sex with him, he would have been too drunk to legally consent.

Throughout the piece, I understand what Hughes says but reading some of his beliefs was hard. He is very opinionated and writes strongly of what he believes in. He loves Turner and states that he loves other criminals such as child molesters and terrorists. I have to include, “Imagine some disturbed man goes around repeatedly abducting innocent little kids and brutally torturing and raping them before ultimately slaughtering the poor kids. I would love that man,” written by Hughes because it is an example of what I disliked so much about his piece. I do not agree with his statements and that example is very graphic so it made finishing the piece difficult. Hughes does not just love criminals and I understand that. He loves all people unconditionally.

“Hate simply seeks to destroy,” is a good statement to summarize Hughes’ piece. He wants everyone to realize that love is a better solution than hate. Hate only fuels the issues and Hughes believes everyone should show love to one another more. Hughes moves on to state that he does not want children or adults to suffer at all and he also does not want rapists and murderers to suffer. He poses the question of whether force is sometimes used on others strictly to cause suffering.

I would rate this piece a 2 out of 4. The only reason I did not make it a 1 is because it made me think and got a reaction out of me but I would not recommend it to others. It is also very well-written in regards to grammar and spelling. I would not read it again and I do not agree with the majority of what Hughes writes but it is something that some may find interesting. It may be some people’s cup of tea but it was not mine.
