When I first started to use audiobooks.com as an alternative for reading books, I was pleasnalty surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I never thought hearing a book could compare to reading it, but this website makes it a very convenient and pleasurable thing to do. Audiobboks.com is a website that offers a wide selection of audiobooks; they range from old classics to the latest and most popular books. To download an audiobook from them you must first set up an account. There is a free trial available, after which it costs $14.95/month. Membership includes one free audiobook per month. The website is set up to be easily accessible and they offer an app from which you can listen to or download audiobooks. You can always listen to a sample of the audio before choosing to purchase it.
I chose to listen to a book called "The Knife of Never Letting Go" by Patrick Ness. This book was written in first person from the point of view of a boy named Todd who grew up in a dystopian society on a planet other than earth. In the place where Todd lived, every man could hear everyone else's thoughts, an anomaly that was attributed to the destructive war between humans and the natives of the planet. Life was hard and everyone was resigned to the dreary reality, or so Todd thought.
Todd soon discovered that nothing was simple in his small hometown. Everything he had been told growing up was a lie; the version of history explained to him as a child was false, everyone around him was pretending to be people they weren’t, and society had a misconstrued opinion of life. He ends up on a journey that takes him on a path to discover the truth of his world.
It was very relaxing to experience the flow of descriptive imagery through the voice of the narrator. "The Knife of Never Letting Go" was performed by Nick Podehl who articulated the plotline effectively and portrayed the voice of the main character well. I really appreciated the amazing sound effects that were placed in certain parts of the story. For example, at a time that Todd felt overwhelmed from hearing many thoughts of other people, the publisher placed a realistically creepy sound effect that involved overlapping voices all saying different things. This really helped me to understand and appreciate what the main character was going through, instead of depending on him to explain it clearly.
I really liked using the audiobooks.com program for listening to books. The only thing about it that really bothered me was that while they host a wide range of books, their selection is not actually so large. It is a very reasonable number of books but if you compare them to large bookselling companies that seem to be provisioned with almost everything, there are many audiobooks that they do not supply. Overall I would rate it a 3 out of 4 because it is a very well done, user- friendly system. I would highly recomend this website to any book-lover who likes hear stories read to them and doesn't have too many problems with modern technology.
