Stanford University student-athlete, Brock Turner was convicted of three counts of felony sexual assault. He was convicted of sexually penetrating a 22-year-old intoxicated and unconscious woman. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment of which he served only three. Most of the country was outraged at the horrifying crime committed by the young man and his subsequent release. Social media was in a frenzy as people shared strong negative reactions online.

In his 18 page booklet, author Scott Hughes presents his thoughts on the episode and particularly on collective public outrage.

When I started reading the book, I wasn’t sure I liked what I read and almost abandoned it, but then I decided to give the author a second chance and I’m glad I did. After a few pages, I began to understand what he was trying to say. Even though it is a breezy read, there is a lot of material for thought here. The author isn’t really campaigning for Turner here, nor does he believe that any crime should go unpunished. He merely brings forth the positives of love over hate. It is easy to hate, it is easy to take a harsh decision under the influence of hatred.

He says that people should definitely be punished for misdeeds but hatred should not be the driving force for such a decision. In today’s age of social media, it is very easy to pick sides and feel blind hatred. A lot of time we decide we hate something/ or someone even without understanding the complete context simply because other’s on the internet is doing the same. It is an example of the herd mentality. The author urges everyone to take a step back and consider the other option, that of love and forgiveness. To take logical decisions before outraging.

The author points out that as humans we try to find excuses to justify hate. It is the easier road that humans generally take. It is much more difficult to love. It is especially difficult to love people who have done wrong. But we must try and love more, it’s worth a try.

I rate this book 3 out of 4. In the first few lines, the author proclaims that he loves Brock Turner, this can be quite misleading as people might feel that the author is advocating for a criminal and be blindsided. While I understand the author’s sentiments about forgiving and loving unconditionally, I feel that it is easier said than done. Also, it is a very personal choice. But overall, the book is a good one time read.
