Audiobooks is an online site which allows you to buy a large variety of high quality audio books. Customers sign up for a subscription and are given a free book every month and access to thousands of books both on the computer and on smartphones.
Potential customers can sign up for a 1 month free trial and receive one free credit, another free credit can be earned just by rating the app. After the free trial, the price is $14.95 with one credit per month. The credit can be used on any book at any price so if you wanted to buy ´The Complete Works of Shakespeare´ you would save yourself a substantial amount of money.
This price is similar to that of competitors as is the number of credits you receive, the only negative is that the credits need to be used within a certain amount of time or you lose them.
The website itself is very well designed. It has a clear, logical layout that is organised, yet aesthetically pleasing without being overwhelming. It is easy to navigate and locate the book you want. This is also true of the android app.
The ´Play Now´ and the ´Download´ buttons are large and easy to use, allowing for online streaming or downloading for offline use.
On both the website and the app, your library is organised beautifully and efficiently, with book details and chapters being readily available, making it effortless to switch between them and find what you´re looking for.
The syncing between the website and the smartphone application is also seamless meaning you can switch without missing anything or having to go back unlike similar services.
Although you only receive one free audiobook per month, the website allows you to search for books by categories, one of which is free books, making it very easy for you to find a new book to read without spending too much money. The books in the free section are generally older, less well known books, but if you have no specific book in mind or don´t mind sorting through them then you´ll find a gem in there for nothing.
Another advantage to this service over others that I have tried is the added features that make your reading experience better. There are two different reviews given for each book, one for the book itself, another for the narrator. Essential for those who have had too many good books destroyed by poor narration.
Featured books are displayed clearly with their rating visible so it´s very easy to find the next best read. Book lists are also published so you can keep up to date with what´s hot right now and always have inspiration for your wish list.
The last feature that really makes this service incredible is the ability to make notes on the smartphone application. You can make notes about the books as you´re listening to them which is essential for students and for anyone listening to non-fiction who wants to enhance their learning. This feature has become the highlight of the service for me.
Overall the service is high quality and delivers what it promises. The only negatives that I have found are; credits expire after a couple of months, books must be bought via the smartphone app rather than the website and there is, as of yet, no feature to rival the Whispersync of its leading competitor.
I rate this service 3 out of 4 stars because it´s brilliant and gives its customers everything they need. As of yet, the price is still too high considering that customers must pay for subscription and again for content.
I won´t continue to use this service and the only reason for that is because I have found the whyspersync feature of its competitor invaluable for read larger books. When they have something similar, I would definitely consider switching my service.
