I Love Brock Turner Review

I Love Brock Turner by Scott Hughes is a book expressing the author's thoughts on the outrage and disgust that pervaded the internet for many days and weeks when the young man, Brock Turner, was given such a light sentence concerning the crimes that he was charged and convicted of committing. There was so much hate and anger directed at him for the things that he did. So many people wishing to cause him bodily harm and crying foul concerning the justice system because of the fact that Brock Turner also happens to be white.

In this book we read the thoughts and insights of the author who expresses that he doesn't hate Brock Turner but that he loves him. Many people would read that and conclude that he cares very deeply for this individual but that's not the case. He cares for him as he would any other human being. Now, while I don't personally agree with this on every level oddly enough I find myself understanding his thought process for saying this.

This book and this author ask us really at the end of the day...what is your heart? We are so quick to say we love those who do us good but if we profess to love we must love all. Not an easy concept and not something that just happens instantly but the most profound things never really are. Now if asked do I agree totally with this? I'd have to say no having been a victim of similar circumstances myself of being in a very abusive relationship. But if someone were to ask me if I HATED Brock Turner my answer would simply be...No, I despise him for the behavior that he did.

This book normally is not one that I would pick up because of the initial controversial title but when I initially got it it was to help benefit a good cause. But this book is also one that can have the ability to open one's eyes should we choose to allow it. Hate is an easy thing and it's all consuming poison. What Brock Turner did was wrong. I like that this book is eye opening and that the author really hammers it home gently with a couple of reminders to "Love our enemies, bless those that curse us and to do good to those who despitefully use us." These is not something contrived. These are words we all know too well. I will admit that the part that I didn't really like was when the author talked about people calling themselves a Christian but still saying that they don't love Brock Turner. It's almost like they are trying to find fault with these people. To err is to be human and not everyone is going to have the same thought process or mind set that the author does. It's just a given.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I give this book this rating because for me it is an eye opening short read. The author brings to light some interesting concepts that most people don't really consider when dealing with this case. No one really stops to look at all the facts and understand all of it fully. We simply heard certain things and reacted and ran with it from there. Maybe if we had stopped for a moment things would be different...including Brock Turner. Would this be a book I'd recommend to others? Selectively because as we have seen, not everyone is going to approach this subject with an open mind and that is what is most needed.
