Nightlord: Sunset by Garon Whited is an epic fantasy sci-fi read.
The story follows the life of Eric, a teacher, turned vampire after a night of heavy drinking. He is suddenly dealing with a new reality and what that ultimately means for his humanity. Fortunately for him, vampirism comes with a lot of perks. The downside: being hunted by the Church of Light. With the help of his maker, Sasha and one of his best friends, Travis, he manages to come to terms with his new "condition". But then Sasha is killed by the soldiers of the Church of Light and Eric decides that vengeance is the only way to go. By way of magic, he finds himself in an alternate universe. Here encountering elves, orcs, goblins and other creatures are commonplace. Magic is ever present and valued. But as luck would have it, being a dead life-sucking creature was a big no-no also in this world. Although keeping a low profile would have been best it is just not possible with a massive metal horse called Bronze who likes to munch on coal and a sword called Firebrand, whose favorite pastime include sleeping, battling, and back talking. Eventually, Eric manages to find the leader of the Church of Light and finds himself in the center of an epic battle between Darkness and Light.
I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive when I started reading this book. I mean it is about vampires, elves, orcs, knights, wizards, talking swords, dragons, ... And as much as I love a good fantasy story lately I found authors who wrote such stories lacking. I am glad I pushed through the first few chapters that were a bit lukewarm because the story became a whirlwind of astounding proportions that left me breathless.
The story is written as a diary and has a single point of view, Eric's. This type of writing feels more real, everyday, more believable albeit at times a bit confusing. But the story itself flows freely and is well-written.
The characters we meet are well defined, presented with both good and bad qualities. We get to see how they think, what their beliefs are, what demons hunt them, how they justify their own actions or lack thereof.
I did notice a few minor inconsistencies in the story, but there are few and far between. All in all, I loved this book. Especially Eric. It was like reading a story written by your grumpy grandpa with a very dry sense of humor. This book is definitely going on my "to re-read" bookshelf.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to all lovers of Lord of the Rings, A Song of Ice and Fire, and Harry Potter. You will definitely not want to miss this one.
