Nightlord: Sunset by Garon Whited is sci-fi/fantasy novel about newly created vampire Eric. During a night of drinking with his buddies, Eric encounters Sasha. The following morning he awakes at her house and slowly learns that she has turned him into a vampire. Though originally he tries to run from the truth, he soon realizes that what Sasha has told him is true. He returns to Sasha so he can learn how to be a vampire. The story begins to unfold which will include vampire hunters or the Light as they call themselves who will take Eric to a different dimension or world. Due to these vampire hunters, Eric will travel to a different dimension.
As Eric comes into this new dimension, he begins to learn about the different elements and characters of this new world. He will encounter gypsies, goblins, magicians, elves, trolls, and even knights. The book seems to cover most mystic creatures including a dragon. Eric will become Halar in this new dimension but he also will not be your typical vampire or as we have come to understand vampires should be. He can be out during the day and he eats food. Also he seems to be someone who can do many things besides being a vampire. He is a magician who seems to be able to do all sorts of things such as heal people and shape mountains.
The positives of the book are that there is a lot of action taking place. There are battles with knights, trolls, and dragons. Eric/Halar takes care of the sick and injured. The main characters of the story are likeable. It is basically a story of good battling evil and you find yourself rooting for Eric to win against the vampire hunters.
The negatives of the story are that it goes in so many different directions. Eric seems to encounter every type of mythical creatures that has been written about. He battles with knights. He trains as a magician. He encounters supernatural beings who consider themselves gods. He deals with elves, goblins, and trolls. Then he deals with vampire hunters. It was hard to get a grasp of the basis for the story.
The story is told in the form of daily journal entries from Eric. This is a good concept because you are able to see Eric’s struggles and how he obtains his knowledge of his new state of being. However, I feel that some of the entries are tedious or repetitive. This is the main reason I give it a 3 out of 4 stars. I think he tells the reader certain things over and over again which I feel is unnecessary such that he has to be away from people at sunrise and sunset. I believe if you enjoy vampires along with other mythical creatures you might enjoy this book.
