Solaris Seethes (Solaris Saga Book 1) by Janet McNulty is a fast paced science fiction book based on unlikely alibis and revenge.
The story begins with Solaris, a ship with artificial intelligence; though the story quickly moves to the main character Rynah. Recently engaged to her former commanding officer Klanor, unaware of the ultimate betrayal that awaits her as she begins her day as a security officer working in a geothermic lab on her home planet Lanyr. The lab falls under attack, the intruders intent on stealing the crystal that makes the planet habitable by stabilizing the planets magnetic fields. In an attempt to retrieve the crystal before it's too late Rynah finds herself face to face with the man who is in charge of the attack to her lab. Rynah finds herself betrayed, and fleeing for her life as the planet quickly destabilizes.
Missing the last ship off the planet Rayna remembers her grandfathers ship left sitting in an old hangar for years after his death. To Rynah’s surprise she finds the ship Solaris in pristine condition and equipped with artificial intelligence. She escapes to the Chestur Nebula where she goes into hiding. Unsure if there is anyone left alive from Lanyr, Rynah is set on getting her revenge for being betrayed, and bringing the crystal home to re stabilize the planets magnetic fields. With the help of Solaris Rynah soon realizes the tales from her childhood are not just stories, but a prophecy holding the key to finding all six crystals in the galaxy. Left with no option but to attempt to stop the man responsible, Rynah has Solaris teleport four humans from what is considered the primitive planet Terra Sector. With the philosopher, the warrior, the lover, and the inventor aboard Solaris they begin their search to retrieve the remaining crystals before they are stolen and their power is used to destroy every planet in the galaxy.
Solaris Seethes has an interesting and unique plot line. I found the beginning to be a bit slow because of the over description of the surroundings and character description; however, once the plot starts to unravel the book moves a long very quickly. I did find the author to embellish on descriptions of scene and wardrobe without a follow up further in the story as to why it might be of significance in the story line. The story was well written enough for me to not want to put it down. I was impressed with how well the book was edited, finding no major grammatical errors. The only thing that I would change are the run on sentences. Several are so over punctuated a single sentence turns into an entire paragraph.
All the characters are well developed and most are not only likeable, but easily relatable. Though the main character Rayna can be rude, and demanding I believe that it helps to make the story that of one a person could relate to. Solaris also becomes a character i grew fond of in the story. The artificial intelligence known as Solaris seems to have a mind of its own, and attitude to spare. Solaris mentions in the story how she wished to one day be able to have friendship and move freely, leading one to wonder about Solaris’ past, if there was one and what the future might hold for the ship.
I found Solaris Seethes to be a very enjoyable book to read, and I wasn't ready for when the book abruptly ended. I have not found myself to enjoy many science fiction books, but this one is the exception. It is well laid out and there is a character for everyone to identify with. There is little to no mention of romance in Solaris Seethes which would make this book suitable for school aged children to adult readers. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The reason I did not rate this book at four stars was the run on sentences, the over description of un important details in the scenes and characters, and I was left feeling that there was a lack of personable relationships in the book. This book was an easy read and I would recommend it for anyone looking to read a good science fiction book a little out of the ordinary.
