Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is a nonfiction book written by Morton E Tavel, MD. This book consists of 62 chapters. As the title suggests, the book is separated into three sections, consisting of: Tips, Myths, and Tricks. Even though there are three sections, the topics overlap because they all go together. Dr. Tavel worked as a heart doctor and professor. He has written two other books beside that one. Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is kind of a sequel to his other book Snake Oil is Alive and Well, but it isn't necessary to read the first book as the tips stand alone, even within the book.
The book, while all about health, covers various topics, including tips on losing weight, the health benefits of chocolate, and the dangers of coffee. It includes a lot of different topics, each topic having its own chapter. With 62 chapters, there is a lot to learn from.
Every chapter is given a title, relating to the topic. Dr. Tavel gives information about the common ideas behind the topic before explaining various things. He talks about the science behind certain ideas. Most chapters include a formal conclusion, summing up the best idea of the chapter, but all chapters have some sort of summary at the end.
The thing I like most about the book is Dr. Tavel labels what each chapter is about so you know exactly what you are getting into. If a chapter or topic doesn't sound interesting, you simply skip it and go to the next one. The topics aren't interconnected so you can jump around as you please, allowing each person their own experience in reading it.
Dr. Tavel also writes things in a very interesting way. Even though it is very informational, it almost has a conversation feel to it. It's like you are talking to someone about the information and they are just telling you about it.
It is evident that Dr. Tavel put a lot of time and research into writing this book. The book is full of interesting information that is not common knowledge. He included a reference section in the end of the book, which is made up of six pages.
I give the book 3 out of 4 stars. I found the book very interesting. I learned a lot while reading it and is something I am going to keep going back to read.
Overall, I think the book is interesting. It's perfect for anyone who is interested in learning about foods or learning in general.
