Sunset by Gary Whited is a fiction/fantasy novel in the vampire literature family. There is a love story going on at all times in the background of the book but the novel really is about an adventure from almost the very beginning. The main character spends his book trying to avenge those who attempted to kill him, killed his (common law) wife and hurt his friend.
He discovers that the people who did it aren’t as easy to find as looking them up on google or even the black web. Depending on how you process things, one might look at this as a story written around time travel, jumping to different worlds or hopping to another plane/dimension.
I was pleasantly surprised with the depth to which the author gave the characters and their interactions. You really got to learn about them as opposed to many novels I’ve read where everything is only about the main character (or two main characters in the love story) and everyone else is chopped liver. The supporting characters were developed and involved enough to where they really got to play in the foreground instead of always being in the background. He left enough to the reader’s imagination to where I wasn’t bored though.
I would definitely describe the book as interesting- so much so that I wasn’t really able to put it down. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a fiction novel- I mostly read self-discovery nonfiction right now which requires me to read slower, soak it in then apply what I’ve learned, so it was a welcome change of pace to be able to read straight through!
While I really enjoyed the book, the cliffhanger did not leave me wanting more enough to want to delve into the rest of the series. To be quite honest, had I known that it was so long, there was a good chance I wouldn’t have taken it. Because of my curiosity and inability to put it down outside of when I had to- like to go to work or drive-I was more wrapped up than I can afford to be for two more books. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I only rate it that due to a few errors that I found in it.
I think that people who liked Harry Potter when they were younger might like this one. Like that series, in addition to being really hefty reads with plenty of story line, it gives a great amount of detail of what being a Nightlord is like and really draws you into a multidimensional plot that is about more than a love story. In addition to that, it has a nice twist on how he became what he is and what some of the characteristics are.
