Yesterday: A Novel of Reincarnation by Samyann is a romantic mystery. It is about love, loss, and a strong sense of deja vu between a fine Chicago policeman and an attractive young woman who saves his life. The storyline is a discourse between the present and the past, wherein the argument of reincarnation is explored in the extensive bond between Amanda Parker and Mark Callahan and recollections of their 19th century war torn past selves.

Yesterday is also a distressing story of escape through the American Civil War and The Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In this subtle romance of the past and present, Mark battles through Amanda's denial, owing to heart wrenching events of the loss of her loved ones, to prove that she will be able to love again as she once loved.

They met when Amanda saved Mark from a derailing train in the city. Among the turmoil of the disaster, they experienced a strange feeling of an unknown bond between them. Both Mark and Amanda are determined to uncover about the past life memories of their relation during the late 19th century. During her precedent regressions, Amanda recalls episodes from her former life as Bonnie, a girl who underwent a distressing escape from the American Civil War before settling in Chicago.

Reincarnation is an exciting theme to come across in a work of fiction because theories and beliefs about it are normally found in grim cryptic texts. Samyann’s attraction towards reincarnation and cyclical life is apparent in the story, and I appreciated the signs to keep the account secured to the theme, ranging from grandfather clock to the mysteries she leaves for the readers to uncover. The author’s research is pristine. Chicago is not a backdrop but a living world that the writer created for the readers. The transitions between past and present were persuasive and appropriate. The past-life segments of the story integrate historical facts and fiction impeccably. Samyaan has the imaginative aptitude required to breathe life into historical accounts.

I rate Yesterday 3 out of 4. The novel is emancipated by the quality of the writing and the combination of history into the story. It is a good read but I would not recommend to those readers who prefer their fiction to be based on the realities. It is pretty much something we read, enjoy but never believe. This is both a romance and a mystery. The historical background is substantial, there’s a clever weaving of past lives relapse and modern forensics. Altogether an enjoyable but a slow paced read.
