This book is titled “Health Tips, Myths and Tricks.” The author is Morton E. Tavel, MD. He is a retired physician specialist. He has done countless medical journals and editorials which were nationally peer-reviewed. His previous book is the “Snake Oil is Alive and Well. The Clash between Myths and Reality. Reflections of a Physician.”

First and foremost this is a health book. The author has extracted a lot of research data from around the world to back up his arguments. This book is split into 3 major parts; Tips, Myths and Tricks.
1)In the Tips section, comprising half the book, the author discusses health and wellness advice that can be incorporated into one’s daily life.
2) In the Myths section he presents some of the more common misconceptions about almost everything regarding our physical makeup. Maybe it should be called the “myth busting” section.
3) In the Tricks section he explains various ways that we can avoid being scammed into buying health products that claims to be beneficial but are not. What you don’t know can hurt you and empty you pocket.

There are many misleading health info out there. How do you know which one can be trusted? This book will guide you. This book gives out general health tips. Just about any general ailments or health concerns that the average readers will experience in their lifetime is probably discussed here. So it is a good book to have in every home. There are very few medical jargons so it is quite easy to understand.

The author challenges some of the most commonly held believes with regards to what “healthy” actually means. Do you know that just by drinking a little water before dinner you could lose as much as 8 pounds in body weight over the course of a year? This is just one of the many useful advice that is given here. The advice given are all backed up by facts.

If, like me, you are often left wondering whether or not to take the advice given by health magazines or websites, this is definitely the book for you. Unfortunately what you don't know can hurt you. Should you be avoiding Green tea or coffee, or both? This book gives you the answer. It looks like the author has written a gem of a health book here. It is packed with useful advice. I find this book to be both an entertaining and instructive read. It should be essential reading for those who wants to improve their health. Caregivers might also find this book very useful to have by their side. This book explains, in plain English, almost all the major ailments from the common cold to hypertension to cancer. This book provides a lot of information about what food to eat in order to get the right nutrition for the various ailments. It seems to have a slight nutritionist flavour to it. It even has an "all star" list of food that you must absolutely avoid if you really must lose some weight!

I feel a bit more enlightened and have learned quite a bit of new health facts reading this book. Do you know that leaving close to areas of heavy road traffic can increase the risk of having heart attacks quite significantly? After visiting the toilet should you dry your hands using the paper towel or go for the air dryer? The answer will surprise you.

The author is definitely an ardent proponent of conventional mainstream medical science. He is extremely opinionated and is strongly opposed to the use of alternative medicine. So don’t expect to get any alternative medication advice here!

With the exception of Chapter 25 most of the book is presented with up to date information. I strongly suggest the author update this section in light of latest research (within last year) about vaping. Health books can some times have a short shelf life because medical research is moving so fast.

Major medical myths and conspiracy theories and their origins are discussed in the book. This book might in some ways dispel some of them for the benefit of the readers. There’s a hell lot of practical advice given and you will learn how to avoid being cheated into buying ineffective health products.

I rate this book with 3 out of 4 stars. I am giving 3 stars because this book is packed with useful advice. I am not giving this book a 4 star because the quality can be further improved. The brain did get tired reading page after page of health advice. More pictures and diagrams would definitely enliven this book. Medical science is progressing at break neck speed so some of the data presented are a bit oldish even though they are no more than 2 years old. But having said that the general advice given is still very much valid.

NOTE TO THE EDITOR: Make sure to turn off the spell check tracking before sending this book for printing. I noted a few striked through texts in this copy. I also hope this book will have a wonderful cover.
