Ordinary people are not aware of the realness of the lower world or hell full of demons. Only a few chosen know the true about the interaction between two worlds: human and demonic. Spiteful creatures struggle to get out of hell. They are wicked and dangerous. Demons have a superpower, can possess and control people. Their goal is… the world conquest I suppose (because the demons final aim hasn’t been disclosed completely in the book). What can save the human world? God and Council – a group of people who keep the world balance and actually coordinate the global order. Council, of course, has absolute authority, unlimited resources and capabilities. A Hunters Order serves the Council. Hunters are men who deal with demons first hand, super-soldiers whose weapon is praying along with salt and holy water – a kit that can ruin any demon. However, hell creatures are sly, they can get access even to the soul of an experienced warrior. This is exactly what happened with the strongest Hunter, Arthur. He defeated so many demons that eventually started to lose humanity, became very dangerous and ended up in the hell, where he went almost willingly for the sake of adopted daughter, Abigail. Abigail can’t accept her father’s horrible destiny and tries to bring him back, simultaneously with saving the world. A son of a Council member, Haatim, helps Abigail to fight against demons. Hell creatures, deaths and horrors, valiant warriors, skirmishes, intrigues, friendship, nobility – all of this can be found in the book Raven’s Peak by Lincoln Cole.

I found this book entertaining. I enjoyed reading it. As though I was back to my childhood, when I was absorbed in adventure novels and fiction with a strain of mystic and horror. I love how inner world and growth of characters are shown. But I must admit that I expected more from the “horror” part. I’m an admirer of Stephen King and Edgar Poe, so seas of blood and walking corpses are not real “horrors” for me.

I rate the book Raven’s Peak 3 out of 4 stars. Positive aspects of the book: a very interesting, easy for reading style and a dynamic plot keep a reader amused. A true fan of mystic and fantasy possibly doesn’t find in this book any downsides.

I can’t give this book a perfect score though. I have many questions to the described demonic world. It seems that hell is organized according to demonology, but there are contradictions. For example, serious demons like Abaddon and Belphegor don’t need to get in a human, they have powers of their own. In the book they need to possess someone to be at work. Belphegor is in charge of technology development and discoveries in demonology, whereas, in contrast, in the book he spread paranoia and madness. The character of Belphegor really disappointed me. He is one of the ancient gods, an arch demon, a prince of hell and how easily he was destroyed by two men in less than no time! At that he run away scared by the grace of Allah and love of Krishna. I wonder, why should an ancient Assyrian god be afraid of Krishna who is eight centuries younger, let alone two thousand years younger Allah?

I think that the book Raven’s Peak would appeal the most to fans of thriller with a strain of mystic, exciting and full of dangerous adventures. I don’t advise reading this book those who can be really scared by dissected corpses, blood and mysterious things in abandoned churches that make hair curl.
