REVIEW OF: The Bonding

This is a Science-fiction romantic/erotic book by Imogen Keeper. Simply put it is an erotic story between aliens; human looking aliens, not weirdly shaped creatures, so breathe easy. It is centered on love between two different races; one race with a handful of females on its planet and the other race almost annihilated by another viscous race. The latter race in attempt to preserve its future escapes its demise by choosing some of its people to seek help outside through pods; of which our female character comes from. By some sheer luck the male character chances on our female lead character and rescues her. Considering the varying difference in culture, the two bond as a result of necessity over attraction. The bond however is more complicated than each other imagined it would be. Their bond is threatened by their insecurities as well as their duties to their people; as one of them is royal. So this book basically takes you through how they finally accept their love for each other is beyond the chemistry of bonding or their duties to their people.

It flows easily, thus, making it easy to read. I love that about this book. The writer is pretty good with her descriptions so it is easy to imagine the character and make them come to life in your mind as you read. I, also, did like the fact that she gave a warning before the book about a sexual abuse she described in the book. It prepares you for that scene thus not making the book or the scene too distasteful. With the prior warning, the reader can easily skip that scene if he/she is not tolerant of the idea of sexual abuse. As much as I did not like reading the descriptive narrative of a sexual abuse, I was happy she did not divulge too much into that scene, making it tolerable and not too distasteful.

The story felt a bit light-weight; lacking something deep. I am not a fan of overly complex stories but I appreciate some challenging bits in a plot of any story. This story felt almost too simple for me, thus, making it my only dislike by far. There was a scene with a sexual abuse described. Sexual abuse has never appealed to me so I was a bit wary at that scene. Once again, I want to state how I appreciated the effort of the author to warn her readers beforehand.

There is the general theme of Love and how it conquers all its obstacles. Aside the general theme of Love; conquering all, there is another theme on how Life is or works. Thus to say, Life is never a bed of roses, it can be very nasty at times but life moves on, people learn to adapt to changing moments/events. It molds us either for better or worse. All it takes is an act of kindness and courage to reshape a mindset. I thought that was a powerful theme the story carried.

I would rate it 2 out of 4 stars, because it is fairly entertaining and easy to read. I would recommend it for any romantic/erotic reader who wants to relax with a short easy reading piece; nothing too complex.
