The first few couple of chapters of For the Love of Suzanne by Kristi Hudecek-Ashwill had me wondering if this book was for me. It took me a bit to get into the book, but once I became connected with the main characters, I was hooked! If you like books with historical fiction, westerns, suspense, time travel, and romance, then this is a book you will enjoy. Even if this genre is not what you normally gravitate to, I still think you will thoroughly enjoy Suzanne’s story.

If I am completely honest, I do not typically care for any of the elements of this book besides the romance, so I wasn’t for sure that I wanted to continue reading after I realized the direction the story was headed. Time travel is a genre that I do not care for, but I kept reading out of pure curiosity of how the story would develop. The book had several twists and turn that kept me power reading this book. I finished the book in less than a day! I just couldn’t put it down.

Suzanne is a woman in an abusive relationship and finds herself at a crossroads in her life at the young age of twenty-five. Her luck does not improve when she gets involved in a car accident somewhere in the Arizona desert. A man by the name of Cody Black Fox rescues her and proceeds to tell her that she has been transported back to the year 1860. Suzanne feels as if she is either dreaming or has stepped onto a movie set. Like Suzanne, I was also expecting that there might be a twist at the end where she wakes up and finds that she has been dreaming this whole time.

Suzanne is at the mercy of Cody Black Fox. She does not know how to survive in the harsh conditions of the 1800s, and Suzanne also seems to keep finding herself in dangerous situations. Will Cody be able to keep Suzanne safe? Can Cody help her find her way back to the site of her car crash in the hope that she can get back the life in which she is accustomed? Suzanne is not a very strong woman. She married young and has always been the part of a marriage where she suffered abuse and has never know how to be independent.
Through her journey in the past, Suzanne learns a lot of lessons. She learns to be brave, have courage, and that all men are not out to hurt her. Cody and Suzanne develop a love for each other that complicates the story even more. Suzanne is obviously not cut out to live in the 1800s, but she also does not know how to help Cody travel forward in time. Cody knows that he has to help her find her way home, even if that means that he will lose her forever.

Meeting Cody helped Suzanne bring out her inner strength and courage. She figured out a way to support herself and to gain a sense of strength and independence that she never had before. Suzanne never gives up on Cody and continues to look for him along that lonely stretch of road where they first met.

For the Love of Suzanne by Kristi Hudecek-Ashwill is the first time travel book that I have ever read, and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading her book! Even if a reader does not typically like this genre, there is enough of other genres mixed in to keep the reader interested. I give this book a 3 out of 4 for its entertainment factor, fun story line, and ease of reading. Also, a happy ending never hurts!
